Outer space biotechnologies

In the field of outer space biotechnology, the Institute interacts with the Federal Space Agency, S.P. Korolev Rocket and Space Corporation “Energia” and a number of state scientific centers of Russia. Along with earth-bound experiments, space studies are also being conducted, previously at “Mir” station, and now on the ISS (International Space Station). The work is carried out both for the purpose of fundamental research, and for solving applied problems.

The effect of space flight factors on various biological objects is being studied to obtain strains with increased activity. The purpose of the experiment is to obtain highly effective strains of microorganisms in order to produce oil biodegradation agents and organophosphorous compounds, crop protection agents, and plant growth stimulators.

Participants in space experiments: JSC “Biokhimmash”, S.P. Korolev RSC “Energia”, YU.A. Gagarin Research and Test Cosmonaut Training Center, JSC “Biopreparat”.

In the course of the experiments, the effect of space flight factors in weightlessness, including microgravity, radiation and heavy charged particle fluxes, on microbiological objects used in the national economy is studied. As a result of the experiments, highly effective strains of producers of crop protection agents, biodegradants of products of xenobiotics contamination (with oil, oil products and organophosphorous substances) have been obtained.

The effect of space flight factors on physiological and biochemical properties of microorganism cultures is being studied by their exposure to specially designed packages for 10 days to 20 months, depending on the flight schedule.
